Fimmvorduhals Day Tour – Hiking on warm lava

Fimmvorduhals Day Tour – Hiking on warm lava

In the spring of 2010 a fresh eruption on the Fimmvörðuháls Ridge was like a short prelude to the main eruption in Eyjafjallajökull. We offer you an opportunity to visit the freshly baked craters of Magni & Modi, on a day trip from Reykjavik with the lush valleys of Þorsmork as a bonus.

The tour starts with a pick you up at your hotel in Reykjavík in the morning in a super jeep and drive towards Þórsmörk. The first stop is at the popular Seljalandsfoss waterfall to view the waterfall and to pick up the ones starting the tour at that location. After that the tour heads to Þórsmörk on a rough gravel road crossing unbridged rivers on the way to the slopes of the mighty Eyjafjallajökull glacier.

Once deep inside the valley of Þórsmörk where birch forests cling to oddly shaped palagonite formations you leave the car and start hiking.

The path winds upwards through majestic canyons, along narrow ridges aptly named Kattarhryggur (Cat's Spine). As proceeding higher the multiple gullys and canyons of Þórsmörk catch our attention.

The tour crosses the narow Heljarkambur (Hell's Ridge) before the pushing up the last hill before seeing the craters.

Picking the way through the fresh lavafields and some snowfields you end up sitting on top of a still hot volcano. Ca. 20 cm below the surface the rock is too hot to touch and it is still possible to barbecue some hot dogs there in unforgettable surroundings 1000 meters above sea level.

After a nice stop at the two craters formed during the eruption 2010 and named after two of Odin's sons, Magni and Móði the tour heads back. The descent provides a fresh perspective, offering stunning views over the spectacular landscape of Þórsmörk. Returning to civilization having been touched by nature's awesome power and creative force.

Heading back driving into the sunset to Reykjavík stopping for dinner on the way.
