Hike one of Icelands deepest canoyons and see the tallest waterfall in the country. This tour is suitable for anyone in moderate physical shape.
The tour starts with pick you up in Reykjavik (or you meet the tour at canyon's entrance) and drive towards Hvalfjordur. This isolated fjord is one of Icelands deepest and during the WW2 it played an important role in the Allied effort as a depot and shelter for convoys heading east.
Starting by walking through fields of planted forest and lupine to the gorge of Botnsá river. Going through a cave to reach the bottom of the gorge where you cross the river on a log which could test our nerves and sense of balance to the limit.
Glymur waterfall is 198 meters high. The water cascades and spreads out before plunging into the mossy green abyss. An excellent place for photos and a nice rest and opening the lunch box.
After that the tour hikes on further upwards and closer to the waterfall until reaching the level heath above the waterfall. There the Botnsa river runs smooth and wide on a rock solid bottom. This is where you sit down, take off the hiking boots, put on your sandals and wade across the river under the supervision of your trusty guide. The water may be cold but it is only 20-25 cm deep.
Once across the river, having dried our numb toes and put the hiking boots back on, the tour heads back down to the parking lot on the opposite side of the river seeing this natural wonder from a new perspective.
